Mushroom Production Course Getting An Overwhelmed Reaction

SERDANG, 4 Julai. Oyster mushroom or its scientific name Pleurotus ostreatus is a type of mushroom that often being planted and getting a very high demand from the public. This commodity in general can reach a market price of RM12/kg and this is one of the product that can be highly commercialized. Therefore, looking at the potential productivity and possible high income generation for this product, Mushroom Unit, Crop Division, University Agriculture Park (UAP) has collaborated with the Registrar Office, UPM to organize a mushroom production course specifically for UPM staffs.

This course has been held from the 3^rd to 4^th of July 2019 at the Agrotek Building, UAP. A total of 20 staffs from various departments in UPM have registered for this course. The demonstrators for this program were Mrs Zaliza Mahat and Mrs Azizah Hamid. Participants were taught both on the theory and practical methods. On the first day of the course, the participants were taught the methods of mixing, media preparation and mushroom seeds inoculation into the media. Meanwhile, on the second day, the participants were taught ways to prepare seed for mushroom, types of diseases that can infect this crop and its control methods and also methods of packaging and grading of harvested mushrooms.

According to one of the participant,  the course has taught him a lot of new knowledge regarding mushroom and would one day consider to set up his own mushroom production facility.
